From his most recent project, shaping the sonic identity of The Old Guard 2, to helping craft the immersive soundscapes of Dune and Dune: Part Two, music editor Clint Bennett has built a career at the intersection of music, storytelling, and technology. Working closely with visionary filmmakers, Clint serves as a creative and technical conduit—bridging composers, editors, mixers, and directors to bring a film’s musical language to life.
As part of our Well Versed series, we asked Clint about the best parts of his job and what it’s like to work alongside some of the most iconic filmmakers of our generation.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
What aspect of your work has the greatest impact on an audience?
If someone were to go watch a film that I worked on, I would say that if they walk out simply thinking—just “I loved that movie,” or “That movie moved me,” then we succeeded, as far as I’m concerned.
Tell us about your experience working with Denis Villeneuve.
I love working with Denis. He’s a wonderful person and an amazing director, just off the charts. And with him comes Joe Walker, his editor, and both of them together are great. Denis is so lovely. One of the best things is when you’re on a dub stage with him, and something is really working, you see him light up, and he goes, “I deeply love this.” Everyone who has worked with him knows that phrase. It’s the best feeling and just lights up a room. So, I love that. I deeply love that! You just know that you contributed to helping him achieve his vision—what he’s trying to get across emotionally through storytelling. It feels good to help him do that. I want to do that forever. It’s so much fun. It’s a great family to be part of.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is being able to work with amazing artists as a creative team. I mean, obviously I love music, but working with people who I really enjoy that are functioning at a really high creative level is just a privilege and a blast. And the second adjunct is I still get to learn something new every day, and who doesn’t love that?
